The magic of constructive self-talk
The world-famous Dutch painter, Vincent Van Gogh had once quoted “If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.”
The voice in our head is a chatty fellow. Sometimes wise, sometimes funny, sometimes emotional and many times very critical. And what are we most afraid of in a social setting? To be judged and criticized by others for our sovereign choices. Although as a society we deem with respect towards highly critical people as it seems to be a sign of intelligence, I find it to be a double-edged sword. A critical person who is harsh on others is most probably very critical to own self. Thus, not able to enjoy the simple pleasures of life or lead a content inner life. Thanks to Mr. Chatty, the intelligent voice of our head.
A fair amount of criticism (of others and self) is healthy, it acts as a reality check and motivates us to stretch our limits. But what if one is unable to relish life because there is a constant war in the head. Then Mr. Chatty needs some interrogation. As suggested by the Indian mystic, Sai baba, here are the four questions to validate the worth of a thought:
Is it true?
Is it kind?
Is it necessary?
Does it improve the silence?
Take a moment to pick one of the many thoughts going on in your mind right now and lets interview Mr. Chatty. Above are the four golden questions.
Did he survive? Or he went on silence mode? Or is he making fun of you for doing this weird act? Mr. Chatty can be persuasive and might use many magic words to retain his power. But the most magical word is ‘Abracadabra’. In Hebrew it means “I will create as I speak”. What we speak to others and ourselves about our own self matters a lot. And if you want to create a fairly peaceful inner life, here are some tips to comfort and loosen Mr. Chatty:
Breathe deeply whenever you remember. Add reminders initially.
Find creative ways to express yourself like painting, singing, making music, writing, etc. It is a positive outlet for negative thoughts and emotions(too) to be set free.
Practice gratitude daily. It is scientifically proven to improve brain chemistry.
Create regular resting habits like afternoon naps, spa, slow tea sip, etc. to ensure the mind is not always in a hurry. This breaks the momentum of fast, unconscious thoughts.
Practice optimistic affirmations and meaningful speaking by consciously filtering them through your higher intention and positive emotion.
I think mine Mr. Chatty is feeling heard now and wants to finally rest. Chao for now!
